The researcher of this study wanted to find out the occurrence of hedges, boosters, and filler words in the individual verbal narratives by male and female participants from six English 212 (Speech) classes in Cebu Institute of Technology.<br/>The two sub-problems that the researcher wanted to determine where: (1) the words that function as a) hedges, b) boosters, and c) filler words; and (2) the frequency of the most commonly occurring a) hedges, b) boosters, c) filler words: in the verbal narratives of male and female participants.<br/>Thirty-eight (38) students who had average grades of 4.5 to 5.0 qualified as participants. Nineteen (19) males and nineteen (19) females were asked to narrate an American movie. An audio tape recorder was used as a tool to aid the gathering of the data. The narratives were recorded and were then converted into transcripts where the data were taken. <br/>The data from the participants? narratives showed that both genders used words that function as hedges, boosters, and filler words in their verbal narratives. With the method of gathering data, individual verbal narratives, both genders employed hedges, boosters, and filler words. The data also showed the use of Cebuano words which function as hedges, boosters, and filler words by both genders. |
